چکیده

Abstract This paper reviews the evidence for long term trends in anthropogenic activity and population dynamics across Holocene central Mediterranean chronology of cultural events. The this has been constituted a database 4608 radiocarbon dates (of which 4515 were retained analysis following initial screening) from 1195 archaeological sites southern France, Italy Malta, spanning Mesolithic to Early Iron Age periods, c. 8000 500 BC. We provide an overview settlement record prehistory add assessment available order review traditional narratives on region. new enabled us identify most significant points time where levels, change have together caused strong temporal patterning record. Some these episodes localized one region, whereas others part pan-regional trajectories that took many centuries play out fully, revealing prehistoric societies subject collapse, recovery, continuing instability over long-term. Using evidence, we model growth rates various regions so tempo at certain space can be identified, compared, discussed context demographic change. other published databases data, drawn comparisons wider Europe, northern Africa. Finally, include brief response synchronously but independently developed (Palmisano et al. J World Prehist 34(3), 2021). While there are differences our respective approaches, share general conclusions large-scale identified through meta-analyses record, offer perspectives how society functioned.

Santorini eruption radiocarbon dated to 1627-1600 B.C.

Precise and direct dating of the Minoan eruption of Santorini (Thera) in Greece, a global Bronze Age time marker, has been made possible by the unique find of an olive tree, buried alive in life position by the tephra (pumice and ashes) on Santorini. We applied so-called radiocarbon wiggle-matching to a carbon-14 sequence of tree-ring segments to constrain the eruption date to the range 1627-16...

Testing the timing of radiocarbon-dated events between proxy archives

For interpreting past changes on a regional or global scale, the timings of proxy-inferred events are usually aligned with data from other locations. However, too often chronological uncertainties are ignored in proxy diagrams and multisite comparisons, making it possible for researchers to fall into the trap of sucking separate events into one illusionary event (or vice versa). Here we largely...

Regional Demographic Trends and Settlement Patterns in Central Italy: Archaeological Sites and Radiocarbon Dates

Context These datasets were collected as part of the scope of the project “Changing the Face of the Mediterranean” and currently represent the largest repository of archaeological data for central Italy from the Late Mesolithic (ca. 8,000 BC) to the fall of the Roman Empire (500 AD). This project aims to reconstruct long-term trends in population dynamics and vegetation change from the introduc...

Mediterranean Ocean Colour Chlorophyll Trends

In being at the base of the marine food web, phytoplankton is particularly important for marine ecosystem functioning (e.g., biodiversity). Strong anthropization, over-exploitation of natural resources, and climate change affect the natural amount of phytoplankton and, therefore, represent a continuous threat to the biodiversity in marine waters. In particular, a concerning risks for coastal wa...
